Pierre Cardin Celebrates 70 Years In Fashion With a Retrospective Show at Vanderbilt Mansion

French designer Pierre Cardin has been known to stage fashion shows in unexpected locations. Unlike today’s Fashion Week shows in capitals like Paris, New York, Milan and Tokyo, Cardin’s fashion spectacles were always held in venues that reinforce his visionary approach to fashion. It was Cardin who first showed on Moscow’s Red Square as well as the Forbidden City of China back in 1979.

The invite for his most recent 70th retrospective show read: “Pierre Cardin will personally host a special runways at the Breakers this June…we are thrilled to invite you to a weekend in Newport.” It was, in true form, a location uncommon for a fashion event of great scale. The idea of witnessing 70 years of innovative fashion in the great halls of the Vanderbilt summer mansion hinted at the specialness of the occasion.

Each of the 90 iconic pieces in the collection was personally handpicked and curated by the fashion legend himself. Cardin had also intended to host his guests during the weekend but had to send close confidantes in his stead due to a fall. Representing the Pierre Cardin maison were Maryse Gaspard (muse and director of Haute Couture), Rodrigo Basilicata (nephew) and Matthew Gonder (headliner at Cardin’s Maxim’s in Paris).

Cardin’s career began in the mid 40s. He worked for various French couturiers among them Paquin and Elsa Schiaparelli. It was when he joined the house of Christian Dior as head of design that his penchant for avante garde designs and ideas became more pronounced. During his tenure at Dior, he contributed in developing the New Look. In 1950, he founded his own label and began creating pieces that are often associated with “space age” or futurism. One of his most memorable creations was the bubble dress, which he presented in 1954. The design is now considered a classic with its cinched waist and rounded skirt resembling a bubble. Geometric details and shapes in his design resulted in a distinctive look that was ahead of its time. More than his style propositions, it was his efforts to democratize fashion that makes him a legend. In an era were apparel was custom, he helped introduce the concept of ready-to-wear dressing. Style icons dressed by Cardin include Laurel Bacall, Jackie Kennedy and Brigette Bardot.
